Landmark rail project moves closer to completion with system installations starting in December.
The long-anticipated Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link takes another major step forward as rail system installations are set to begin by December 2024. This critical phase will focus on laying tracks and integrating advanced systems, signaling progress towards enhanced cross-border connectivity.
The RTS Link is a flagship collaboration between Singapore and Malaysia, aimed at easing cross-border travel. Connecting Woodlands North MRT Station in Singapore with Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, the RTS Link is designed to handle 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, offering a seamless alternative to the often-congested Causeway.
According to a joint statement by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), Malaysia’s MRT Corporation, and RTS Operations (RTSO), rail installations will include key systems such as signaling, communications, traction power supply, and integrated supervisory control.

On the Singapore side, 80% of civil infrastructure works, including viaducts and tunnels, are complete. Remaining tasks include architectural finishing, roadworks, and immigration facilities. Integration with the Thomson-East Coast Line’s Woodlands North MRT station will commence in 2025.
In Johor Bahru, significant progress has been made, with 93% of railway civil infrastructure, including the Bukit Chagar Station and maintenance depot, already finished. Earlier-than-scheduled access allowed trackwork installations to start in September 2024.
A symbolic handshake structure at the RTS sea viaduct underscores the partnership between the two nations. This project reflects the commitment of both governments to improving regional connectivity.

Once completed, the RTS Link will connect Singapore and Malaysia in just five minutes, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing convenience for commuters and tourists alike.
The RTS Link promises transformative improvements in cross-border travel. By streamlining transit between Johor Bahru and Singapore, it underscores the region’s focus on sustainable and efficient infrastructure development.
Rail system installations for the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link will commence in December 2024, marking a significant milestone in the project. With over 80% of Singapore’s civil works and 93% of Malaysia’s infrastructure completed, the cross-border rail link is on track to revolutionize travel between the two nations by 2026.
