Protesters demand Batam mayoral election re-run due to alleged irregularities.
Hundreds of Batam residents gathered outside the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) office on December 3, 2024, demanding a re-run of the city’s mayoral election. The demonstrators, representing the Alliance of Batam People and the Coalition for Honest and Fair Elections (KRPPJA), alleged widespread irregularities, collusion, and electoral malpractice, calling the process unjust and undemocratic.
The protests were sparked by allegations of collusion, voter intimidation, and vote-buying during the 2024 Batam mayoral election. Demonstrators claimed that the election lacked fairness and transparency, citing evidence of political bias and administrative failures. The demonstration follows public dissatisfaction with election results favoring candidate pair No. 02, Amsakar Achmad and Li Claudia Chandra.
Allegations of Systemic Irregularities
Demonstrators accused local officials of collusion, claiming voter intimidation and vote-buying incidents. Pregnant women were allegedly targeted with monetary incentives to support specific candidates, a move described as exploitative.

Demands for Electoral Reform
The protesters presented a five-point petition, calling for a re-run of the election and comprehensive electoral reform. They demanded stricter oversight from Bawaslu and legal action against those involved in malpractice.
Criticism of Bawaslu’s Role
Bawaslu was criticized for its perceived inaction, with accusations of ignoring reports of electoral violations. Complaints included public officials photographed endorsing candidates and delayed responses to reported misconduct.
Calls for Transparent Processes
The petition urged the Election Commission (KPU) to rectify procedural flaws, including the mishandling of voter notifications and sudden changes to polling station locations without notice.
