Indonesia has initiated the phased implementation of 100% electronic passports (e-passports), beginning December 1, 2024. This initiative marks a significant leap in modernizing the country’s immigration system, with 13 designated immigration offices leading the way.
The Directorate General of Immigration (Ditjen Imigrasi) has embarked on a nationwide rollout of e-passports to enhance travel security and streamline immigration processes. This effort aligns with international standards and aims to position Indonesia at the forefront of secure travel documentation.
The initiative kicks off with e-passports issued at 13 immigration offices, including those in Soekarno-Hatta, Jakarta, Medan, and Batam. Nationwide adoption will follow as the program progresses.

E-passports integrate advanced features, including encrypted biometric data such as facial recognition and fingerprints. These measures minimize forgery risks and ensure secure cross-border travel.
E-passports facilitate quicker immigration clearance, particularly in countries equipped with automatic passport scanners. This upgrade aligns Indonesia with global travel security standards.
Plt. Director General Saffar M. Godam emphasized that most countries have adopted e-passports as the official travel document. Indonesia’s move to 100% e-passport issuance reinforces its commitment to global standards.
