JAFF: Driving Cultural and Economic Growth

A Catalyst for Cultural Exchange

JAFF is more than a film festival; it’s a gateway for partnerships between filmmakers, distributors, and production companies. By spotlighting Asian cinema on a global stage, JAFF encourages cultural exchange that enriches the artistic landscape while unlocking lucrative business prospects.

Boosting the Local Economy

Yogyakarta thrives during JAFF, with the festival drawing tourists who contribute to the city’s hospitality, tourism, and retail sectors. Local businesses—hotels, restaurants, and vendors—reap significant benefits, demonstrating how cultural events can serve as engines of regional economic growth.

Indonesia’s cinema industry is flourishing. In 2023, total ticket sales exceeded 114.5 million, with local films accounting for over 53 million admissions. This revival reflects post-pandemic resilience, supported by cinema chains like Cinema XXI, which recorded IDR 5.2 trillion (approximately SGD 433 million) in revenues—an 18.9% increase from 2022.

Notably, food and beverage sales reached IDR 2 trillion (approximately SGD 166.5 million), a 29.3% growth, highlighting consumer interest in elevated cinema experiences. Projections for 2024 suggest revenues could exceed IDR 2.4 trillion (approximately SGD 200 million), driven by growing attendance and competitive pricing.

And for JAFF, the 18th Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) concluded on 02 December 2023. JAFF 2023 attracted 20,444 attendees, a significant increase compared to 2022, which saw around 16,000 visitors. JAFF 2023 also collaborated with 60 film communities and hosted 205 film screenings. JAFF 2024 is expected to draw an even larger audience than the previous year.
