Batam’s electoral process encountered turbulence as five commissioners from the Election Commission (KPU) were summoned by the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) over the abrupt cancellation of the second public debate for the mayoral election. Bawaslu summoned the five KPU Batam commissioners on November 25, 2024, at their Sekupang office. The inquiry focused on allegations of procedural violations reported by the public. Chairman Antonius Gaho stated that the inquiry aims to determine if election laws were breached.

The debate was canceled after disagreements over debate rules. Candidate pair NADI insisted on using paper notes, while rival pair ASLI opposed the use of any materials, including electronic devices or notes. The deadlock caused a two-hour delay before KPU decided to cancel the event.

KPU Commissioner Bosar Hasibuan emphasized that the debate cancellation was due to the candidates’ inability to agree on procedural matters. He described the investigation as an opportunity to clarify the sequence of events that led to the cancellation.

The inquiry has not disrupted KPU’s ongoing election preparations. Commissioner Adri Wislawawan confirmed that logistical distribution and campaign material removal remain on schedule, ensuring that the election timeline is unaffected.
