The Malaysian government is set to announce its final decision on the QR code-based immigration system for border crossings with Singapore. The system, trialed since June 1, has already shown significant success in reducing congestion for over 350,000 daily commuters. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that the announcement of the chosen system and contractor will be made by year-end.
As part of a proof-of-concept (POC) project, three QR systems—MyTrip, MyBorderPass, and MyRentas—have been tested at Malaysia-Singapore land borders, including the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ (KSAB) and Bangunan Sultan Iskandar CIQ (BSI). The initiative aims to streamline border processes for the nearly 400,000 daily travelers between the two countries.
The trial, running from June 1 to November 30, 2024, tested the systems across key land crossings. MyTrip, MyBorderPass, and MyRentas demonstrated different capabilities in easing traffic congestion.
More than 350,000 travelers have registered for the trial, with MyTrip garnering 200,000 users, while MyBorderPass and MyRentas saw approximately 80,000 registrations each.
Authorities are planning to expand QR code use to car lanes and foreign travelers. Johor’s transport committee chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, emphasized the need to resolve early issues before broader implementation.
The QR system successfully reduced border congestion for bus and motorcycle users, who constitute over 80% of daily crossings. It also proved effective in incorporating facial recognition for enhanced security.

Home Minister Saifuddin highlighted long-term plans to integrate QR code systems into all forms of transport, including cars and foreign travelers, by 2025, starting with phased implementations next year.
