The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has confirmed the completion of the West Natuna Transportation System (WNTS) pipeline, which will redirect gas from Singapore to Sumatra by 2028. This strategic project aims to enhance Indonesia’s domestic gas supply, previously exported to Singapore.
The WNTS project involves the construction of a gas pipeline connecting the gas network from Natuna to Sumatra, signaling a major shift in Indonesia’s energy distribution. Laode Sulaeman, the Director of Oil and Gas Infrastructure Planning at ESDM, highlights this project’s pivotal role in transitioning from exporting gas to Singapore to supporting domestic energy needs.
Scheduled for completion in 2028, the pipeline’s connectivity extends from Natuna to Pulau Rempang in Batam, setting the stage for further expansion into Sumatra. This extension aligns with the termination of the gas export contract to Singapore, redirecting resources to bolster domestic infrastructure and energy security.
The project is linked to the Dumai-Sei Mangkei gas pipeline, soon to be auctioned by the government. This connection underscores the strategic planning of Indonesia’s energy sector to integrate the gas networks of Sumatra and Java, highlighting a significant expansion in national energy capabilities.
Sulaeman detailed that the infrastructure project, including the basic design and route calculations, is in its final stages of planning. The government has proposed a budget of IDR 7.8 trillion from the state budget (APBN) to ensure timely and efficient completion.
The implementation of this pipeline is expected to facilitate economic growth by ensuring a stable energy supply across the region, which is critical for industrial development and meeting the rising domestic demand for energy.

Further logistical details such as the procurement of 3,642 bottles of ink, 86,382 seals, and 22,932 cable ties have been finalized, ensuring that all necessary materials for the secure and efficient operation of the pipeline are in place.
The West Natuna pipeline project is a strategic development that not only redirects gas supply within Indonesia from international exports to domestic utilization but also significantly enhances the national energy infrastructure. This transition supports Indonesia’s long-term energy security and economic stability.
