At the Summit of the Future, global leaders committed to a new vision for tackling interconnected issues, including environmental preservation, education, and economic inequality. The UN’s Pact for the Future emphasizes several critical areas:
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): A commitment to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes goals related to poverty alleviation, education, and environmental sustainability.
Environmental Protection: Prioritizing actions to combat climate change and protect marine ecosystems, particularly in regions vulnerable to pollution.
Community Empowerment:Encouraging local initiatives that engage communities in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard in matters that affect their lives.
The Pact specifically emphasizes Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing critical global issues such as climate change, poverty alleviation, and the creation of inclusive opportunities. These goals serve as a blueprint for the Tanjung Uma Empowerment Program to drive tangible change in Batam’s coastal communities.
Tanjung Uma Empowerment Program: A Local Answer to Global Challenges

Just 25 kilometers from Singapore, Tanjung Uma is one of Batam’s most densely populated areas, facing significant environmental and socio-economic challenges. Yet, this community is also full of untapped potential. Through the Tanjung Uma Empowerment Program (TUEP), we have been able to drive impactful initiatives that align directly with the UN’s global goals.
1. Environmental Stewardship
Tanjung Uma is a coastal village where waste management is a chronic issue. The lack of infrastructure has led to 5 tonnes of waste entering the sea daily. TUEP addresses this problem head-on through regular clean-ups, marine trash audits, and waste management education programs, which align with SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Since 2023, TUEP has mobilized 1,422+ volunteers and removed over 7.2 tonnes of waste from public spaces. These efforts contribute directly to preserving marine life and improving the environment for both Batam and neighboring Singapore.
2. Educational Empowerment
Education is at the core of sustainable development, and TUEP is committed to providing residents of Tanjung Uma with the tools they need to succeed. Our Basic English Classes have had over 260 sign-ups, with 85 graduates from the program so far. By enhancing language skills and offering vocational training in hospitality, administration, and sales, TUEP ensures that residents are prepared for both local and international job markets. This is in perfect alignment with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
3. Economic and Social Development
TUEP is not just about clean-ups and education—it’s about building a sustainable economic model for the community. By equipping residents with vocational skills and fostering partnerships with local businesses, TUEP creates opportunities for long-term growth. Our vision is to help Tanjung Uma become a hub for the blue economy, turning waste into resources and unlocking socio-economic potential through sustainable practices. This mirrors the UN’s call for sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11).
