In anticipation of the 2024 simultaneous local elections, the Batam City Government (Pemko Batam) has expressed full support and appreciation for the media’s strategic role in promoting positive reporting to ensure a conducive, safe, and smooth electoral process.
The initiative was highlighted during a Coordination and Consultation Forum themed “The Strategic Role of National Mass Media in Supporting Positive Reporting on the 2024 Simultaneous Elections.” This event was hosted by the Indonesian Ministry of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs and officially opened by the Coordinating Minister, Hadi Tjahjanto, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
Jefridin M. Pd., Secretary of Batam City, stressed the crucial role of mass media as a main pillar in creating a healthy and conducive political climate. “As social media use continues to rise, special mitigation steps are needed to lessen the negative impacts that could emerge from political dynamics in the digital world,” Jefridin remarked during the event.
He further noted that unchecked social media can shape voter norms and values, which, if not balanced with credible and responsible journalism, could lead to instability. “Therefore, we hope the mass media will serve as guardians of transparency and independent monitors connecting leaders with the populace,” Jefridin added.
The importance of the press as an institution that offers information, education, entertainment, and social control was also highlighted by Jefridin. “Credible mass media will act as a counterbalance amidst information disruptions. Upholding journalistic ethics and committing to integrity principles are key to maintaining political stability,” he stated firmly.
On a similar note, Rudi Panjaitan, Head of the Batam City Communication and Informatics Office, emphasized the importance of a transparent and integrous election process. “The 2024 simultaneous elections are an opportunity for the people to choose leaders who can effectively develop their regions. Thus, it is crucial for everyone, including the media and public, to participate in monitoring every stage of the elections,” Panjaitan explained.

Panjaitan also warned the public not to be provoked by unverified news. “Maintaining credibility and responsibility in information dissemination is essential to prevent conflicts that could threaten national unity,” he concluded.
