In a significant stride toward enhancing bilateral trade and ensuring halal product compliance, Indonesia and Singapore have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on the halal certification process.

This agreement, officially signed at the office of Singapore’s Islamic Religious Council, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), is a testament to the strengthening ties between the two nations, aimed at simplifying the trade of halal products and boosting economic exchanges by recognizing each other’s halal certifications.

The MoU was signed by Muhammad Aqil Irham, Head of Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency, and Kadir Maideen, Chief Executive of MUIS, highlighting a collaborative effort to streamline the halal certification process between the two countries.

Initially focusing on food products, beverages, raw materials, additives, as well as slaughtering and meat processing services, the agreement lays the groundwork for broader acceptance of halal certifications across borders, enhancing the market access for businesses in both nations.

By mutually recognizing each other’s halal logos, both countries aim to boost their trade in halal goods, tapping into a market that is increasingly significant economically and culturally, especially considering Singapore’s high ranking in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator among non-majority Muslim countries.

Set to commence on October 17, 2024, the agreement is seen as a starting point with potential for expansion into other areas of mutual interest, further deepening economic ties and cultural understanding between Indonesia and Singapore.

This MoU not only promotes the ease of halal product trade between Indonesia and Singapore but also serves as a model for international cooperation in standardization and mutual recognition of halal certifications. For Singaporeans and international visitors, it ensures a wider array of trusted halal products, reinforcing Singapore’s position as a pivotal hub in the halal trade sector.

Indonesia and Singapore have agreed on a crucial partnership to simplify halal certification and trade, enhancing the flow of halal products between the two countries. This agreement promises to boost economic ties and provide consumers in both nations with a greater selection of certified halal goods, starting in October 2024.
