Indonesia is set to mobilize international and United Nations support to follow up on the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) recent advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared its commitment to leading international efforts in response to the ICJ’s advisory opinion, which it views as a crucial step in addressing Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories.

The ICJ’s ruling, delivered on July 19, 2024, states that Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) is illegal and must end, establishing a legal foundation for international actions.

Indonesia, represented by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, supported the advisory during its deliberations and sees the decision as aligning with international law favoring the Palestinian cause.

L. Amrih Jinangkung, Director General of International Law and Treaties at the Ministry, highlighted plans to engage the international community and the UN to ensure the advisory is acted upon.

The ICJ also suggested that the UN General Assembly consider appropriate measures to swiftly end the Israeli presence in Palestinian territories, a move Indonesia vows to support actively.

Beyond advocating for adherence to the ICJ’s advisory, Indonesia emphasizes the importance of a unified global stance against the normalization of Israel’s actions in the OPT, advocating for substantive measures to reverse the impacts of the occupation.

Indonesia’s proactive stance in rallying international and UN support to enforce the ICJ’s advisory on Israel’s occupation of Palestine underscores the country’s role as a significant advocate for justice and international law in global affairs. This movement not only reaffirms Indonesia’s commitment to supporting Palestine but also sets a precedent for international legal and diplomatic engagements regarding occupation and sovereignty.

Following the International Court of Justice’s advisory deeming Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, Indonesia is spearheading efforts to rally international and UN support for the ruling. This initiative reflects Indonesia’s ongoing commitment to uphold international law and support Palestinian sovereignty, positioning it as a key player in shaping global responses to such critical issues.
