NJM Batam’s marketing representative, Ahua, notes a consistent monthly sale of several electric cars, indicating strong market demand within the region.

The adoption of electric vehicles is still primarily limited to wealthier citizens due to the significant electricity costs associated with charging EVs at home, which can reach up to IDR 5 million (approx. SGD 420) per month.

Electric vehicle buyers benefit from substantial incentives, including exemptions from annual taxes and value-added tax (VAT), making EVs a more attractive investment despite higher upfront costs.

The majority of electric vehicles in Batam are imported from China and Japan, offering a range of models suited to various consumer preferences and needs.
