Business leaders in Batam are urging the Indonesian government to implement policies that will reduce the cost of ferry tickets to Singapore to more affordable levels, concerned that current prices are stifling the city’s tourism growth.
The rise in ferry ticket prices between Batam and Singapore has not gone unnoticed, prompting calls from local business leaders for government intervention. They fear that without action, the growth of tourism in Batam could be severely impacted.
Business leaders, including Eva Betty from Association of The Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) and Jadi Rajagukguk from Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Batam), express concerns that high ferry costs are turning away tourists, especially those from major visitor sources like Singapore and Malaysia.

The inflated ferry ticket prices are believed to adversely affect not just tourism but also other sectors of Batam’s economy, potentially leading to reduced overall economic activity in the region.
The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) is currently investigating allegations of a ticket pricing cartel among ferry operators, which is suspected to be a significant factor in the high costs. This investigation is critical to resolving the pricing issue.
There is an active call for the Indonesian government and regulatory bodies to step in and regulate pricing to promote tourism and economic growth, with a meeting scheduled on June 11 to discuss these issues comprehensively.

The resolution of the ferry ticket pricing issue is crucial. A reduction in costs could lead to an increase in travel and tourism, which would benefit both Batam and the broader region by enhancing cross-border connectivity and economic interaction.
Business leaders in Batam are pressing the Indonesian government to reduce ferry ticket prices to Singapore, citing concerns over the potential stagnation in tourism and local economic growth. With the KPPU investigating possible cartel behaviors among ferry operators, a resolution could foster a more competitive and tourist-friendly environment.
