In Belakang Padang, Batam, rickshaws remain a charming way to tour villages despite the rising popularity of motorbikes.

Rickshaws, locally known as becak, are still popular in Belakang Padang despite the influx of motorbikes on the island nicknamed “Penawar Rindu” (Reliever of Longing). These rickshaws can be found right after exiting the Belakang Padang Port. Dozens of brightly colored becak line the main street, where drivers eagerly offer their services.

Tempo experienced Safri’s rickshaw tour around Belakang Padang village, priced at IDR 60,000 (SGD 5.04). An additional IDR 20,000 (SGD 1.68) can take you to the White Sand Beach, including return transport. Occasionally, Safri has to dismount and push the rickshaw uphill, demonstrating the challenges and dedication of the local drivers.

Safri, now nearly 60, has been driving becak since the 1990s. Previously, rickshaws served as local transportation but have now evolved into a tourist attraction. “It’s now my job to take tourists sightseeing,” he shared.

Safri noted that improved road conditions have made it easier for drivers to guide tourists. “Some days I can take tourists five times before resting,” he said.
