Alipay+ Expands to Indonesia After Malaysia and Singapore

Ant International, the affiliate of China’s Ant Group, is expanding its Alipay+ digital wallet to Indonesia after Malaysia and Singapore.

Alipay+, a digital wallet provider affiliated with Ant Group, aims to extend its presence in Southeast Asia. Having already entered Malaysia and Singapore, Ant International is now expanding to Indonesia. According to Douglas Feagin, Senior Vice President of Ant Group, their research shows that people prefer using the same digital wallet when traveling abroad.

Alipay+ enables foreign travelers to use their home-country applications to make payments abroad via QR code scanning with Alipay or local partners.

Ant Group acquired stakes in Singapore’s 2C2P (2022) and South Korea’s Kakao Pay (2017). The company also partnered with digital payment services like Singapore’s SGQR, Malaysia’s DuitNow QR, and South Korea’s ZeroPay.

Ant International has held discussions with Bank Mandiri, unicorn fintech DANA, and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo). They also consulted Bank Indonesia (BI) for regulatory requirements.

Alipay+ currently connects 88 million merchants across 57 countries and regions, with 1.5 billion registered consumer accounts across 25+ digital wallets and banking apps.

Ant International is eyeing markets in the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe, where Alipay already has a presence.
