Indonesia officially regains sovereignty over the management of its airspace and all related flight information in the Riau Islands (Kepri) and Natuna regions. The Flight Information Region (FIR) is now fully managed by Indonesia, ending Singapore’s 78-year control. Indonesian Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi announced the effective implementation of this sovereignty as of March 21, 2024, marking a significant milestone for Indonesian aviation.
This achievement follows a long negotiation process with Singapore that began in 1995, culminating in an agreement in 2022. The Jakarta FIR has expanded by 249,575 square kilometers or 9.5% to 2,842,725 square kilometers, enhancing Indonesia’s capacity to provide navigation services within the rearranged FIR area. Previously, flights within this region had to coordinate with Singaporean flight navigation, a requirement now eliminated with the FIR realignment.
Official transition of FIR control marks a joyous occasion for Indonesian aviation, as stated by Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.

The expansion of Jakarta’s FIR enhances Indonesia’s navigational service provision, benefiting both domestic and international flights.
The FIR negotiation journey began in 1995, leading to a landmark agreement with Singapore in 2022, ratified by Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2022.
This transition is expected to boost national revenue through increased Route Air Navigation Services (RANS) Charges in the newly included areas.
