Singaporean and Indonesian Students Unite to Forge Zero Waste Innovations at PCU

Around 60 students from Singapore and Indonesia participated in the Joint Immersion Program: Creating Sustainable, Healthy Environment, a collaborative effort by Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore), Petra Christian University (PCU), Universitas Airlangga Surabaya (Unair), and Universitas Ciputra (UC) Surabaya. This initiative aims to educate students about Indonesia’s diverse aspects while fostering sustainable development practices.

The program, designed to give an overview of Indonesia, including its history, geography, environment, business, and culture, has successfully brought together students from four different universities. Through games, performances, industrial visits, and dialogues, it promotes an interactive learning experience centered around sustainability.

Yusita Kusumarini, Chair of Immersion 2024, highlighted the program’s focus on sustainability issues, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. One of the key activities includes creating zero-waste products and showcasing the program’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Participants include 10 students each from PCU, Unair, and UC, along with 30 students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, all supported by two faculty members. This diverse group has embarked on a two-week learning journey at PCU, with plans to continue their studies at other participating universities.

The workshop and fashion show themed “Creating Sustainable, Healthy Environment” demonstrated the participants’ creativity in transforming recycled materials into unique and attractive fashion designs, highlighting the potential of zero waste initiatives in the fashion industry.

The immersive learning experience is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Indonesia and the importance of sustainability, encouraging cross-cultural collaboration and innovative solutions to global challenges.
