Indonesia AirAsia officially inaugurated its Jakarta to Kota Kinabalu route on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, marking the commencement of its ambitious plan to open 12 international routes to six countries this year. Captain Wuri Septiawan, Operations Director at Indonesia AirAsia, revealed the expansion during the launch event at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, highlighting the airline’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and facilitating tourism between Indonesia and the world.
The Jakarta-Kota Kinabalu route, celebrated with a traditional water salute upon landing, is the first of Indonesia AirAsia’s international routes in 2024, offering the only direct flight connecting Jakarta with Kota Kinabalu. This expansion reflects Indonesia AirAsia’s broader strategy to capitalize on the growing travel demand and strengthen ties between Indonesia and key international markets, including Malaysia, the Maldives, China, India, Hong Kong, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines.
The launch event was graced by significant figures, including Sabah’s Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, and other dignitaries, underscoring the importance of this new route for bilateral relations and tourism growth.

Indonesia AirAsia plans to operate 32 aircraft in 2024, aiming for a 20% increase in passenger numbers from the previous year, highlighting the airline’s optimism about its expansion strategy’s potential to boost tourism and economic activity.
Kota Kinabalu is positioned as a destination with significant tourism potential, with the new route expected to ease access for tourists from both Indonesia and Malaysia, offering affordable travel options to explore premier destinations in both countries.
The Jakarta-Kota Kinabalu flight is part of Indonesia AirAsia’s fifth direct route to Malaysia from Jakarta, following existing routes to Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, and Kuching, reinforcing the airline’s role in enhancing Indonesia-Malaysia connectivity.

The initiative is welcomed by local tourism officials, including Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew, who anticipates the route will attract more Indonesian tourists to Sabah, enriching cultural, tourism, and economic exchanges between the two regions.
