Batam Launches First Export of Mangrove Crabs to China: Mayor Rudi Amplifies Regional Potential

The city of Batam embarks on a significant leap in its maritime economy with the first-ever export of mangrove crabs to China, showcasing the city’s rich aquatic resources.

The strategic move to export live mangrove crabs, also known as Scylla Serrata, to Shanghai, China, is a groundbreaking initiative for Batam, potentially transforming the city’s economy and aquaculture industry.

Mayor Muhammad Rudi heralds this inaugural export as the start of Batam’s journey in maximizing its archipelagic potential, setting a precedent for continuous exports to bolster the local economy.

The mangrove crabs, cultivated by local farmer Abun, weigh a total of 120 kilograms with an export value of approximately Rp17.368.450. This equates to around SGD1477 based on current exchange rates.

Mayor Rudi encourages the expansion of aquaculture farms in Batam and its surrounding islands to increase production and sustain the export program.

The commencement of Terminal 2 at Hang Nadim Batam Airport is urged by Mayor Rudi as a crucial step in facilitating easier export-import access, further enhancing Batam’s trade capabilities.
