Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics, represented by Minister Budi Arie Setiadi, has positively acknowledged the collaboration between TikTok Shop and Tokopedia, which reflects a strong commitment to supporting and defending Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) in Indonesia.

This partnership between TikTok Shop and Tokopedia marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s digital economy, with TikTok making a substantial long-term investment in Tokopedia, enhancing the e-commerce landscape in Indonesia.

The partnership is primarily a business-to-business (B2B) initiative, focusing on empowering UMKM in Indonesia, as emphasized by the Minister of Communication and Informatics.

Commerce Minister Zulkifli Hasan reserved his comments on the acquisition, highlighting the significance of the event organized by Tokopedia.

The acquisition agreement involves TikTok investing over $1.5 billion in Tokopedia, which will merge the businesses of Tokopedia and TikTok Shop Indonesia under PT Tokopedia.

GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO) will become a minority shareholder in Tokopedia post-acquisition, with TikTok acquiring 75.01% of Tokopedia’s shares.

This strategic partnership will kick off with a trial period, including the “Buy Local” campaign, coinciding with Indonesia’s National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas) to encourage digital economic growth through UMKM empowerment.
