Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) is rallying stakeholders to boost digital technology adoption, seeing it as a critical driver in escaping the middle-income trap and accelerating national economic progress.
R. Wijaya Kusumawardhana, an expert at Kominfo, emphasizes the importance of fostering a digital ecosystem to support business activities. This approach is seen as key to Indonesia’s future economic trajectory, offering a route out of the middle-income trap.
By 2030, the global market is projected to reach USD 8.92 trillion, a fourfold increase from 2022, with digital technology playing a significant role in Southeast Asia’s economic upliftment.

Indonesia’s digital economy contributed 5.11% to the national GDP in 2022 and accounted for 40% of ASEAN’s total digital economy transactions in 2023, showcasing substantial growth in sectors like e-commerce, transportation, food services, media, and travel.
Indonesia’s digital economy is predicted to grow from USD 76 billion in 2023 to a projected USD 82 billion, potentially contributing up to 20.7% to the GDP by 2025.
Drawing inspiration from South Korea’s success, Indonesia is focusing on technology-based industrialization and public policy reforms to stimulate innovation and productivity.
