In a significant blow to illegal trade, Batam’s police and customs officers have dismantled a network dealing in illicit cigarettes, arresting two suspects and preventing a substantial loss to the state treasury.

The collaboration between Polda Kepri’s Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation and Batam Customs has led to the seizure of 700,000 sticks of Manchester cigarettes and an estimated state loss of IDR 800 million in tax revenue.

Two suspects have been apprehended, identified as YY and JL, following a successful raid on Tirolita Town House in Sungai Panas, Batam.

The seized goods, valued at about IDR 500 million, highlight the ongoing challenge of cigarette smuggling in the region.

Charges laid against the suspects could result in imprisonment for up to 5 years and fines up to IDR 10 billion, showcasing the severity of the offense.

This operation emphasizes the shared concern over illicit trade, especially in Batam’s proximity to Singapore, and the vigorous efforts to maintain order and security.

Further investigations will be conducted to address this issue, aiming to deliver a deterrent effect and safeguard the region’s safety and order.
