The Hang Nadim Airport roundabout in Batam is nearing completion with plans to install a unique ‘Layar Terkembang’ design, symbolizing the Malay heritage and marking a striking entry point to the city.
The ‘Layar Terkembang’ design, a winner of the 2021 Hang Nadim Batam Airport Roundabout Garden Competition, reflects Batam’s cultural identity and commitment to environmental sustainability.
The design, inspired by sailing ships, mirrors Batam’s maritime culture and will be accompanied by environmentally friendly pillars incorporating piezoelectric systems.
Rizki Tridamayanti Siregar, an architecture lecturer at UMN, and Scientia Sacra, a UMN alumni, crafted the winning design, standing out among 32 participating teams.

The design philosophically symbolizes the diversity of Batam’s community, unified despite varied backgrounds in ethnicity, religion, race, and customs.
The project is a collaboration between BP Batam and local government, with contractors PT. Kurnia Djaja Alam and consultant PT. Astadipati Duta Harindo engaged in the construction.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve transportation infrastructure and promote Batam as a modern city, aiming to boost investment and economic growth.
The ‘Layar Terkembang’ roundabout project not only signifies Batam’s rich cultural tapestry but also its aspirations for modernity, offering a new attraction for visitors from Singapore and beyond.
Batam is set to feature the ‘Layar Terkembang’ design at the Hang Nadim Airport roundabout, a symbol of the island’s rich Malay heritage and modern ambitions. This landmark will serve as a beacon for the city’s progressive urban development and cultural pride.
