In a concerning turn of events, the iconic “Welcome to Batam” sign, a landmark symbolizing the gateway to the Indonesian island of Batam, stands at risk of being overshadowed by a new property development project named The Living Peak.

Initially erected in 2010, the “Welcome to Batam” sign has been a significant attraction, inviting tourists from Singapore, Malaysia, and beyond. It marks Batam’s aspiration as a key tourist destination and its visible location on Bukit Clara made it an impressive sight from over 2 kilometers away. However, the landmark is now facing a potential aesthetic dilemma due to the proposed construction of The Living Peak, a commercial and residential complex.

The Living Peak development, incorporating hotels, apartments, shophouses, and an art museum, poses a threat to the visual prominence and aesthetic appeal of the “Welcome to Batam” landmark.

Historically, the area around Bukit Clara was nearly flattened for residential development, only to be saved and transformed into the current landmark. Now, the night-time soil excavation activities of The Living Peak highlight a similar threat.

The funding for the landmark came from Batam City’s budget (APBD), amounting to IDR 472.4 million, under the administration of the City Planning Office. This investment was part of the “Visit Batam 2010” campaign, showcasing its importance to local tourism.

Visible to travelers arriving from Singapore and Malaysia via the Batam Centre International Ferry Port, the landmark has been more than just a sign; it’s been a popular photo backdrop for both local and international tourists.

The current development, by encroaching upon the landmark’s visibility, could significantly alter this dynamic, potentially impacting Batam’s attractiveness to tourists.

The potential overshadowing of the “Welcome to Batam” sign by The Living Peak development not only diminishes a cherished visual symbol but may also indicate shifting priorities in Batam’s tourism and urban planning. The development could reshape the island’s landscape and possibly affect its appeal as a leisure and cultural destination.
