Riau Rhythm, a distinguished music group from Pekanbaru, Riau, recently embarked on a historic US tour, showcasing their unique blend of traditional Indonesian and modern American musical styles.

Having entertained audiences in Europe, India, and South Korea, Riau Rhythm made their first foray into the United States, performing in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York.

Their aspirations to perform in America, dating back to 2003, were finally realized with their US debut at venues including the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and the Jersey City Theatre Centre in Newark.

The tour also promoted their eighth album, “Awang Menunggang Gelombang,” inspired by the expeditions of explorer Ferdinand Magellan and featuring nearly extinct Sumatran oral literature and Bugis literature from Makassar.

The challenge of presenting their music and language to an American audience was met with innovative concepts and a pre-performance synopsis to aid understanding.

Riau Rhythm introduces diverse Indonesian cultural elements to the American scene, distinct from the more familiar Javanese and Balinese gamelan.

Dona Dyah Kusumawardhani, an audience member in Chicago, praised Riau Rhythm for featuring rare instruments like calempong and gambus, enhancing American understanding of Indonesian music.

Riau Rhythm’s successful US tour signifies a growing international appreciation for Melayu music, offering Singaporeans and global audiences a richer, more diverse cultural landscape.
