In a recent development, China has pledged to export up to 1 million tons of rice to Indonesia, an initiative aimed at reinforcing the nation’s rice stock during the El Nino climate disturbances.
Amidst climate challenges and a need for food security, Budi Waseso, the Head of Indonesia’s State Logistics Agency (Bulog), confirmed China’s commitment. This move is seen as crucial, especially when other traditional rice exporting countries have halted their shipments.
Budi Waseso relayed that Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his Chinese counterpart have discussed this potential partnership. “China is ready to assist,” Waseso highlighted.
While the commitment is in place, Waseso clarified that no contracts or realizations for rice imports from China have been made yet. Bulog is still in the process of finalizing contracts with other nations.

Waseso regarded China’s readiness as positive news, especially given the current scenario where many nations have paused rice exports to prioritize their domestic needs.
Elaborating on the rice situation, Waseso mentioned that Bulog is exploring multiple countries for potential imports, including Vietnam, Thailand, and Pakistan. The main goal is ensuring rice stability in Indonesia, and China’s offer stands as a reassurance.
In related developments, Bulog has been making concerted efforts to stabilize rice prices in the market, given the current challenges. They have already rolled out rice in market operations and will continue doing so until prices stabilize.
For neighboring countries like Singapore, Indonesia’s proactive measures to ensure rice stability signify a wider ASEAN effort for food security. Visitors can be reassured of consistent food prices, highlighting Indonesia’s robust mechanisms in ensuring essential commodities remain unaffected by external pressures.
China has shown commitment to exporting up to 1 million tons of rice to Indonesia, strengthening the latter’s rice reserves amidst the El Nino disturbances. While contracts are still under discussion, this move portrays a collaborative spirit among nations to ensure food stability.
