A significant number of Chinese nationals were apprehended on Kasu Island, Batam, during a recent police operation, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Residents of Kasu Island, located in the Belakangpadang district of Batam, were startled by events on Tuesday afternoon, 5th September 2023. The local police precinct, led by the Belakangpadang Chief of Police, successfully detained several Chinese nationals believed to be residing unlawfully on the island.
An insider from Kasu Island revealed that the Chinese nationals were found in a shelter meant for illegal Indonesian migrant workers.
The operation, which took place around 3:00 PM local time, faced challenges. There was a brief chase between the authorities and some of the foreign nationals who allegedly tried to escape through hidden routes to Malaysia.
The same source further divulged that these foreigners were suspected members of a love scam syndicate. The same group had been previously busted at the Cammo Industrial Park Complex, Simpang Kara, the week before. Following that raid, these individuals escaped and took refuge on Kasu Island.
While the police managed to detain numerous individuals, the alleged owner of the shelter, known as Med, eluded capture during the raid.
The Kasu Island community was immensely shocked. The local populace became even more alarmed after hearing warning shots fired by the officers involved in the operation.
