In a combined operation on Tuesday (5/9/2023), police forces from various sectors managed to detain 42 Chinese nationals on Kasu Island in Batam. Additionally, five Indonesians were arrested on charges of harboring and facilitating the escape of these individuals.

This arrest follows a recent apprehension of 88 Chinese individuals involved in ‘Love Scamming’ operations across three locations in Batam city. The newly detained group was reportedly linked to the previous culprits and were planning an escape to Malaysia.

Five Indonesian locals were taken into custody for their role in supporting the escape attempt. According to police sources, they were promised a payment of IDR 10 million for four days of assistance.

Out of the 42 arrested Chinese nationals, eight are females, while the rest are males. They were found in a residence owned by an individual identified as ‘Me’, which served as a hideout.

These detainees are connected to the previously apprehended group of 88 Chinese nationals. They were discovered in different locations including the Kara Industrial Area, Batam City’s Music Hotel, and an office of a property firm in Batuampar.

Capturing the 42 individuals was challenging, as some attempted to flee the police. However, the joint task force, comprising officers from various police sectors and Interpol, thwarted their escape plans.

Upon arrest, the detainees were first taken to Mapolsek Belakangpadang police station before being transferred to Mapolresta Barelang. As observed, intense activity among officers from Krimsus Polda Kepri and Interpol could be seen, though they remained silent about the case’s details.

This recent arrest underscores the vigilant efforts of Indonesian authorities to curb illegal activities in the region, ensuring the safety and security of neighboring countries, including Singapore. Tourists and international visitors can remain confident in the law enforcement measures in place, which aim to safeguard the region’s reputation as a secure travel destination.

In a joint operation, 42 Chinese nationals were arrested in Batam for their links to an earlier ‘Love Scamming’ case. Alongside them, five Indonesian locals were detained for aiding in their escape plans. While the arrest marks a significant success for the Indonesian police, authorities remain discreet about the ongoing investigations.
