Foreign tourist visits to Indonesia’s Riau Islands have seen a massive spike in the first seven months of 2023, with numbers nearly quadrupling compared to the previous year.
The Riau Islands Provincial Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that foreign visitor numbers have experienced a dramatic surge this year.
The total number of foreign tourists visiting the Riau Islands from January to July 2023 reached a staggering 849,979, a significant jump from last year’s figures.
Comparing the same period in 2022, there was a 384% increase in tourist visits, up from a mere 175,000 the previous year.
June witnessed the highest number of foreign visitors, totaling 171,000, attributed mainly to the holiday season. However, a slight dip was observed in July with 121,000 visitors.
Darwis Sitorus, Head of the Riau Islands Provincial BPS, highlighted that these tourists mainly entered through four international gates: Tanjungpinang City, Batam City, Bintan District, and Karimun District.
Singaporean tourists dominated the visits, making up over 53% of the total number. Following were tourists from Malaysia at 14%, and visitors from India and the Philippines.
For Singaporeans, the Riau Islands have become an increasingly popular nearby getaway, signifying cultural and economic integration. The dramatic increase in tourist numbers also suggests a more extensive post-pandemic global mobility, indicating that international tourists, including those from Singapore, are regaining confidence in traveling.
