Indonesia will extend its remote work policy after two months of Friday work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for civil servants reduced Pertalite consumption by nearly 9 percent in April, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said.
WFH Delivers Measurable Fuel Savings
After a coordination meeting on May 26, 2026, Airlangga said Indonesia’s remote work policy, launched in April in response to higher global oil prices, had reduced Pertalite consumption by almost 9 percent in April. On that basis, the government decided to extend the scheme as part of broader efforts to curb fuel consumption and manage subsidy pressure.
New Circulars For Central, Regional, And Private Sectors
The extended WFH rules for central government employees will be formalized in a new circular from State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Rini Widyantini, while Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian will issue guidance for regional officials. The Manpower Ministry will oversee WFH arrangements in the private sector, allowing for adaptation to each industry’s characteristics and needs.
Friday WFH And Mobility Restrictions
Under the policy, civil servants work from home every Friday as part of a national work culture transformation toward more efficient, productive, and digitally driven practices. Supporting measures include restricting the use of official vehicles except for operational needs and electric vehicles, encouraging public transportation, and reducing domestic and international work travel by about 50 percent and 70 percent respectively to reduce fuel-intensive mobility.
Sectoral Exemptions And Education Continuity
WFH does not apply to key public-service and strategic sectors such as health, security, sanitation, industry/production, energy, water, staple goods, food and beverages, trade, transportation, logistics and finance, which must remain on-site to maintain essential operations. In education, in-person classes from primary to secondary levels will continue as normal five days a week, with no restrictions on sports or extracurricular activities.

Initially introduced in response to the impact of conflict in the Middle East on oil prices, the WFH scheme is now also seen as a catalyst for digital governance and more efficient mobility in the public sector. The Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs said the policy supports a longer-term shift toward digitally supported work processes, reduced travel, and smarter use of state resources while mitigating external energy shocks.
