Police uncover simple yet deceptive method used to spread counterfeit money across Batam

A counterfeit money case in Batam has raised concerns among small business owners after a man was caught using fake Rp100,000 bills in multiple neighborhood shops, exposing how easily such scams can slip through unnoticed.

Police Arrest Suspect After Public Report
A man identified as RM was arrested by the Batam Kota Police Criminal Investigation Unit after being caught circulating counterfeit Rp100,000 bills. The case began when a resident, identified as ET, reported suspicious transactions on March 28, 2026, after receiving information from a shop owner who had unknowingly accepted fake cash.

Swift Investigation Leads To Capture
Following the report, the operations team led by Panit 1 Opsnal Iptu Uji Febrianika quickly conducted field investigations. The suspect was eventually apprehended at a grocery shop, Toko Sembako Berkat, located in Taman Mahelia, Taman Baloi, Batam Kota. During the arrest, officers recovered several banknotes strongly suspected to be counterfeit.

Fake Money Used Across Multiple Locations
Police investigations revealed that RM had already spent at least seven counterfeit Rp100,000 notes before his arrest. Four of the fake bills were used at Warung Marcelia, while three others were spent at a shop in Bengkong Permai, indicating that the suspect had targeted multiple small businesses in different areas.

Simple Yet Effective Modus Operandi
Authorities said the suspect used a straightforward but calculated method. He would first observe the situation inside the shop and wait until the shopkeeper was distracted or busy. Only then would he proceed to make payments using the counterfeit money, increasing the chances of the fake notes going unnoticed.

Suspect Faces Criminal Charges
RM is currently being detained at the Batam Kota Police station and has been charged under Indonesian criminal law related to the circulation of counterfeit currency. Police continue to investigate the case and are urging business owners to remain vigilant when handling cash transactions.

The Batam counterfeit case highlights the vulnerability of small businesses to simple yet deceptive scams. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, especially in busy urban and cross-border areas like Batam, the incident underscores the importance of awareness, careful cash handling, and stronger preventive measures to protect local economies from financial crimes.
