Record drug seizure highlights growing misuse of vape devices for narcotics trafficking
What appeared to be ordinary vape cartridges turned out to be part of Johor’s largest drug trafficking bust to date, exposing a sophisticated operation involving cross-border coordination and financial management.
Largest Drug Seizure Recorded in Johor
Johor police arrested two men on January 29 in separate raids, uncovering a large-scale drug trafficking operation using vape cartridges filled with narcotics. The total value of drugs and seized items was estimated at RM1.19 million, marking the biggest drug-related seizure recorded in the state so far.
Roles of the Suspects
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said a 25-year-old local man was identified as the main trafficker and was arrested in front of a bank in Taman Mount Austin. A 38-year-old Singaporean man was arrested in Taman Molek and was believed to be responsible for managing the syndicate’s finances, highlighting a cross-border element in the operation.
Massive Drug Cache Discovered
Following the arrest of the local suspect, police raided a house in Taman Setia Indah where they seized 3,200 vape cartridges containing ketamine and 48 packs of ecstasy weighing a total of 960 grams. Authorities said the use of vape devices to conceal drugs reflects an evolving trafficking tactic aimed at avoiding detection.
Cash and Assets Seized
In addition to the drugs, police confiscated RM136,500 in cash and a Toyota Cross believed to be linked to the illegal operation. The seizure of assets is being handled under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.
Clean Records but Ongoing Investigations
Both suspects tested negative for drug use and were found to have no prior criminal records. They have been remanded for seven days from January 29 to assist investigations. Police are still probing how the syndicate sourced the drugs and whether more individuals are involved.
Warning on Vape-Related Drug Abuse
Authorities warned that the misuse of vape cartridges to distribute drugs poses serious public health and enforcement challenges. Johor police said intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations will continue, especially given the increasing sophistication of drug distribution methods.
This record-breaking seizure underscores the growing threat of drug trafficking networks operating across Malaysia and Singapore, particularly through innovative concealment methods such as vape devices. The case highlights the importance of cross-border cooperation and robust enforcement to curb the evolving narcotics trade affecting both countries.
