Authorities foil international drug trafficking attempt using extreme body concealment methods
Indonesia’s fight against transnational narcotics trafficking intensified after authorities uncovered a high-risk smuggling attempt involving extreme and life-threatening methods.
Arrest at Soekarno-Hatta Airport
The Directorate General of Customs and Excise arrested a Pakistani husband and wife for attempting to smuggle more than one kilogram of methamphetamine into Indonesia by swallowing drug-filled capsules. The arrest took place at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport following coordinated intelligence and enforcement efforts.
International Cooperation Exposes Smuggling Attempt
Customs Director General Djaka Budhi Utama confirmed that the case was uncovered through cooperation between Soekarno-Hatta Customs and the Indonesian National Police. Speaking at a press conference in Tangerang on Friday (9/1/2026), he said the suspects were two Pakistani nationals suspected of international methamphetamine trafficking, as reported by antaranews.com.
Suspicious Medical Screening Raises Red Flags
The suspects, identified as MJ (36) and SB (29), arrived on a Lahore–Bangkok–Jakarta flight on January 6, 2026. Although initial luggage inspections found no illicit substances, further urine tests returned positive results, prompting authorities to conduct more advanced medical examinations.
X-Ray and CT Scans Reveal Shocking Findings
X-ray and CT scans revealed that MJ had swallowed 97 capsules containing 1,075.9 grams of methamphetamine, while SB had ingested 62 capsules totaling 563.33 grams. Authorities described the method as extremely dangerous and indicative of organized drug syndicate operations.
Significant Social and Economic Impact Prevented
Officials estimated that the seizure could save approximately 8,196 lives and prevent rehabilitation costs amounting to Rp 13.11 billion. The case highlights the broader societal and economic toll of narcotics distribution and the importance of early interception.
Severe Penalties Await the Suspects
Both suspects have been charged under Indonesia’s Narcotics Law and Health Law. If convicted, they face maximum penalties including life imprisonment or the death sentence, reflecting Indonesia’s strict stance against large-scale drug trafficking.
This case underscores Indonesia’s firm commitment to combating transnational drug syndicates while reinforcing the importance of regional vigilance. For Indonesians and Singaporeans alike, it serves as a stark reminder that drug trafficking remains a serious cross-border threat requiring sustained cooperation, advanced detection, and uncompromising law enforcement.
