Kluang and surrounding towns expected to benefit from rapid development under JS-SEZ expansion

Johor’s ambitious Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is rapidly reshaping the state’s economic geography, with Kluang now positioned to emerge as a major satellite city similar to Seremban’s role in the Klang Valley.

Kluang: A Future Growth Engine

At the launch of the Majestic Johor x Renggam Fiesta, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced that Kluang is set to become a key satellite city under the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). He likened Kluang’s rising role to that of Seremban in the Klang Valley, highlighting its strategic importance in Johor’s broader economic plan.

“Bit by bit, areas surrounding the economic zone are beginning to experience the spillover effects of development,” said Onn Hafiz, noting early signs in Simpang Renggam and Renggam.

SEZ’s Reach Beyond Johor Bahru

Unlike previous initiatives that focused solely on Johor Bahru, the JS-SEZ is designed to benefit all 10 districts of Johor. The 357,128-hectare zone encompasses major hubs such as Iskandar Malaysia, Forest City, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, and Desaru.

The Iskandar Malaysia region includes Johor Bahru City Centre, Iskandar Puteri, Tanjung Pelepas–Tanjung Bin, Pasir Gudang, Senai–Skudai, and Sedenak—strategically selected to support long-term growth and cross-border trade.

Transportation Projects to Boost Integration

Connectivity is a core component of JS-SEZ success. Onn Hafiz emphasized how infrastructure projects like the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and the Gemas–Johor Bahru Double Track Electrified Project will connect satellite towns like Kluang with the zone’s economic core

“These projects will enhance connectivity between Johor’s districts and the key areas within the JS-SEZ,” he said, confirming that development will proceed in phases to maximize impact.

Promoting Inclusive Development and Tourism

The Johor state government is actively working to ensure that no district is left behind. The JS-SEZ will also serve as a catalyst for tourism as Johor gears up for Visit Johor Year. With improved infrastructure and increased visibility, towns like Kluang will be promoted as both tourism and investment destinations.

Onn Hafiz said the state will continue promoting local attractions in tandem with economic expansion, reinforcing the SEZ’s role in shaping Johor’s multi-sectoral future.

Strategic Spillover Already Evident

Signs of early progress are already visible. Simpang Renggam and Renggam have begun to experience a development uptick, indicating that the JS-SEZ’s ripple effects are tangible. As infrastructure and transport networks strengthen, more satellite towns are expected to emerge across Johor.

This proactive and inclusive strategy ensures balanced growth while positioning Johor as a powerful economic corridor between Malaysia and Singapore.

The Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone is more than a border initiative—it is transforming the entire state. With Kluang emerging as a primary satellite city, the spillover effects are already driving infrastructure, tourism, and economic growth. For Indonesians and Singaporeans eyeing investment, tourism, or business opportunities in Malaysia, towns like Kluang may become crucial gateways to the future of Johor’s development.
