A 76-year-old man lost nearly all his retirement savings after trusting a scammer met on TikTok.

A Singaporean senior was scammed of S$55,500 after being lured by a woman known as “Ms Li” on TikTok. Despite clear signs of deception, the victim remains convinced of her authenticity—even after losing his life’s savings.

The 76-year-old man first encountered “Ms Li” on TikTok on April 21. Captivated by her appearance and fluent Chinese, he engaged in light conversation, which soon shifted to WhatsApp by April 29. Claiming she could help him profit through “business,” Ms Li persuaded him to download a modified “commercial” TikTok app via an unverified link.

Tricked Into Investing via Virtual Wallet

Ms Li later guided the victim to install a virtual currency wallet on May 1, encouraging him to upload images of his debit card—front and back—and link the card to the app. He was told that the setup would allow him to manage withdrawals for a growing online business. The victim transferred funds incrementally, believing in the legitimacy due to initial successful withdrawals.

S$55,500 Gone: Retirement Dreams Shattered

The total amount transferred reached S$55,500, a sum comprising nearly all his retirement savings and an additional S$10,000 borrowed from a friend. When withdrawals ceased to work, he realized he had been conned. Emotionally devastated, he eventually confessed the loss to his three children but chose to hide the truth from his wife to spare her distress.

Despite the financial blow, the man remains adamant that “Ms Li” is a genuine person based in Hong Kong. He said he had video-chatted with her and received “real-time” photos, suggesting to him that she wasn’t using AI-generated content or stolen images. Ms Li also changed to a Hong Kong-registered phone number, which he took as further proof of her authenticity.

Emotional Toll and Family Support

The emotional fallout was severe—he lost sleep, appetite, and peace of mind. On June 6, he filed a police report, hoping for justice. His children have since pledged to provide him S$1,000 monthly for living expenses, concealing the arrangement from their mother.

Online Scams Target Vulnerable Elderly

This case underscores the rising trend of digital scams targeting elderly individuals via popular platforms like TikTok. With the lure of personal connection and quick financial gain, scammers manipulate emotions and trust. Authorities urge users to be vigilant and avoid downloading unverified apps or sharing banking details with online acquaintances.

This incident sheds light on how emotional manipulation through social platforms can devastate lives—especially among the elderly. As online scams grow in complexity, awareness and vigilance become essential. Families must stay informed and proactive in protecting vulnerable loved ones, while governments and tech platforms must enhance safeguards to combat such fraud.
