Four Indonesian climbers advance to speed finals after strong qualifying performances in Nagoya.

Indonesia strengthened its medal hopes in sport climbing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after Aditya Tri Syahria broke the Games record and joined three teammates in advancing to the final stage.

Aditya Breaks Asian Games Record
Aditya Tri Syahria topped the men’s speed climbing qualification on September 30 with a time of 4.62 seconds at Portmesse Nagoya Exhibition Hall in Japan. The result broke the previous Asian Games record of 4.95 seconds set by fellow Indonesian Veddriq Leonardo at Hangzhou 2022.

Record Comes After Four Attempts
Aditya initially recorded 4.74 seconds on his first attempt and 4.70 seconds on his third, after a false start on his second run. He produced his record-breaking 4.62-second performance on the fourth attempt, securing first place in qualification.

Veddriq Also Reaches Final Stage
Veddriq also advanced after finishing fifth in qualification with a best time of 4.78 seconds. Aditya and Veddriq joined Indonesia’s two women’s representatives, Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi and Berthdigna Devi Surya Kusuma, giving Indonesia four athletes in the final rounds.

Desak and Berthdigna Advance From Women’s Qualification
Desak finished third in the women’s speed qualification with 6.29 seconds, while Berthdigna placed fifth at 6.49 seconds. China’s Deng Lijuan led the qualification with an Asian Games record of 6.23 seconds, followed by South Korea’s Jeong Jimin at 6.25 seconds.

Singapore Climbers Await Indonesian Rivals
In the women’s final round, Berthdigna was drawn in a heat with Singapore’s Eilin Tan, China’s Zhou Yafei and Kazakhstan’s Adeliya Utesheva, while Desak’s heat included Singapore’s Jeanette Frances Koh, Kazakhstan’s Tamara Ulzhabayeva and South Korea’s Sung Hanareum. In the men’s event, Veddriq was drawn with Singapore’s Ezell Qing Wei Low and Kazakhstan’s Amir Maimuratov and Damir Toktarov, while Aditya entered the first quarterfinal heat.

Aditya’s 4.62-second run gives Indonesia a new Asian Games sport climbing record while four national athletes remain in contention in the speed events. The final rounds also create direct Indonesia-Singapore matchups, with climbers from both countries competing in several heats for advancement and medals.
