A teenager was arrested after allegedly assaulting convicted child sex offender Amos Yee near the Doujima anime convention at Suntec Singapore, prompting police investigations and safety assurances from organisers.
Assault Outside Suntec Convention Centre
Police said they were alerted to an incident at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre at about 2.15 pm on May 9. Officers found that a 27-year-old man had suffered minor injuries after being assaulted by an 18-year-old boy. The youth was arrested for causing public nuisance, and investigations are ongoing. The incident occurred on the sidelines of Doujima, also known as Doujin Market, a home-grown anime convention held at halls 403 to 405 from May 9 to 10.
Viral Videos Show Cosplayer Attacking Man
Videos circulating online show a person dressed as Yuji Itadori, the protagonist of anime series Jujutsu Kaisen, repeatedly punching, kicking and stomping on a man as bystanders watch. The attacker briefly walks away before returning, leaping onto the man and bringing him to the ground, then delivering elbow strikes as the victim curls up. A second person eventually intervenes, pulling the attacker aside. The man on the ground is then seen holding his head, standing up and walking away.
Amos Yee Claims He Was The Victim
At 2.26 pm on May 9, Amos Yee posted on X a photo of himself with what appeared to be injuries to his lower lip and finger, accompanied by the caption: “Just been attacked in the anime convention. Look at the bloodied up lip.” Police did not name the victim, but the timing and imagery in the post matched the circulating clips. Yee, a convicted child sex offender, has drawn public anger since his return to Singapore, and his presence at public events has become contentious.
Organisers Say Attack Happened After Yee Was Turned Away
Doujima’s organisers said the altercation took place when Yee was no longer on convention grounds. They stated that he had approached staff at the event entrance and was informed that he was banned, after which he left the convention area. The organisers said his tickets had been cancelled after he announced his intention to attend, adding that they acted following public reports and concern. They stressed that the event does not condone violence and that safety of visitors and exhibitors is their top priority.
Doujima Reiterates Ban And Safety Commitment
On May 8, a day before the incident, Doujima’s organisers had posted on Instagram that “a known problematic influencer” would be banned from the event. “We’ve cancelled his ticket and are working to ban him from all our shows. We take the safety of everyone at our convention very seriously,” the post read. In their May 9 statement, they described Doujin Market as “a safe space for people who love creative arts and our community” and reiterated that they reject both harassment and physical retaliation, urging attendees to report concerns to staff rather than taking matters into their own hands.
