71-year-old charged over fatal RM50,000 debt shooting in Johor restaurant.

A 71-year-old farmer has been charged with murdering three people in a Kota Tinggi restaurant shooting that investigators believe stemmed from an unpaid debt.

Charge And Court Appearance
Farmer Lim Lian, 71, was charged on April 27 in the Kota Tinggi Magistrate’s Court with murdering two Malaysian men, Wong Poh Soon, 61, and Chen Kwai Hwa, 64, and a foreign woman, Tran Thi Trang, 37. The alleged offences occurred at Kedai Chan Fong Moi in Jalan Delima, Taman Kota Jaya, around 1.30pm on April 19. Lim nodded when the charges were read to him in Mandarin before Magistrate Nurkhalida Farhana Abu Bakar, but no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the High Court.

Legal Framework And Next Steps
Lim is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years plus at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Eizlan Azhar requested a mention date within two weeks to obtain consent to transfer the case to the High Court; the court fixed May 13 for mention and no bail was offered, as the charge is non-bailable.

Alleged Weapon And Motive
Earlier reports said the three victims were shot with a Benelli M/super shotgun inside the restaurant. Investigators believe an unpaid debt of about RM50,000 may have motivated the attack, highlighting the potential for financial disputes to escalate into lethal violence when firearms are involved.

Arrest And Firearm Licence
Police arrested the suspect about 200 metres from the scene shortly after the incident, and he was remanded for seven days before being charged. Authorities confirmed that Lim held a valid firearm licence, raising questions about monitoring and safe use of legally owned weapons in rural and small-town settings.

Community Impact And Prosecution
The killings have shocked residents of Kota Tinggi, where such violent incidents are rare, and underline the importance of strict prosecution under Malaysia’s Penal Code to deter gun-related crime. Defense lawyer Belinda Low is representing Lim, while prosecutors prepare the case for High Court trial, which will scrutinise motive, firearm use and the circumstances surrounding the alleged debt dispute.

The Kota Tinggi triple murder case underscores the grave consequences when debt disputes intersect with ready access to firearms, testing Malaysia’s justice system and firearm controls. Indonesians and Singaporeans who travel or do business in Johor are reminded that financial conflicts and weapons can be a deadly mix, reinforcing the need for robust legal safeguards, responsible gun licensing and community support mechanisms to resolve disputes before they explode into violence.
