Difficult terrain and limited access hamper firefighting efforts in Seranggon Lama
A forest and land fire broke out in Galang, Batam, burning around 15 hectares of land before joint emergency teams managed to extinguish the blaze after an overnight operation.
Fire Breaks Out in Galang Forest Area
A forest and land fire erupted in Seranggon Lama, Galang District, Batam, late Tuesday night, prompting an emergency response from authorities.
Police received reports of the fire around 9.15pm, triggering the deployment of firefighting teams and security personnel to the affected area.
Joint Teams Mobilised to Fight Flames
A total of 18 personnel from the Kepri Police’s Ditsamapta unit were dispatched to assist with the firefighting operation.
They coordinated with local police, the Riau Islands Mobile Brigade (Brimob), Batam Fire Department, and teams from companies PT MEG and SGA.
Drone Used to Map Fire Hotspots
Upon arrival at the scene around 10.49pm, the joint team conducted aerial monitoring using drones to identify fire hotspots.
This mapping allowed responders to determine the safest route to reach the affected areas and plan their firefighting strategy.
Difficult Terrain Hampers Operations
Access to the fire zone proved challenging, with firefighters forced to trek through steep, rocky and slippery terrain.
Vehicles such as fire trucks and armoured water cannon units were unable to reach the site, requiring crews to fight the flames manually.
Fire Finally Extinguished at Dawn
After hours of effort, the fire was finally extinguished at around 5.30am on Wednesday.
Authorities estimated that approximately 15 hectares of land were affected, with four separate hotspots identified during the operation.
Although the fire caused significant damage to forest land, authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported. Officials say the situation is now under control as teams continue monitoring the area for potential flare-ups.
