Police probe alleged teacher misconduct as school reinforces student safety measures
Batam’s education sector is facing intense public attention after a serious allegation involving a vocational school teacher raised concerns over student safety and institutional oversight.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating an alleged sexual misconduct case involving a teacher at SMK Negeri 1 Batam. The teacher, identified by the initials MJ, 33, was reported to police for allegedly committing an indecent act against a male student. Batuaji Police Chief AKP Bayu Rizki Subagyo confirmed that a formal report has been filed and an investigation is ongoing.
Witnesses and Timeline of the Incident
According to police, investigators have questioned three witnesses, including a student, the student’s parent, and the school’s vice principal. The alleged incident is believed to have occurred on January 6, 2026, at around 5.00 p.m. local time, after school hours had ended. The act reportedly took place inside an empty teachers’ room.
Allegations Surface From Student Reports
Information gathered indicates that the alleged misconduct involved coercive and inappropriate behavior toward a male student. The case came to light after reports were submitted by a Grade 10 student, prompting further scrutiny within the school environment.
School Confirms and Cooperates Fully
SMK Negeri 1 Batam principal Deden Suryana confirmed that the school had been summoned by police to provide information. He stated that the institution is fully cooperating with law enforcement and has handed over the case entirely to the authorities for legal handling.
Internal Findings Reveal Broader Concerns
Following the report, the school conducted an internal survey involving around 50 students. The results revealed multiple alleged incidents of sexual harassment involving male students, ranging from inappropriate touching to behavior indicating sexual misconduct. These findings intensified concerns about student protection mechanisms within the school.
CCTV Evidence and Alleged Modus Operandi
Deden explained that the alleged modus operandi involved calling students deemed problematic and asking them to remain after class hours before bringing them into the teachers’ room. He added that student testimonies were supported by CCTV footage showing the teacher escorting students into the room.
Teacher Suspended as Student Welfare Prioritized
Despite being described as polite and well-mannered since joining the school in 2023, MJ has been suspended from teaching duties. The school has also ensured that affected students are receiving attention and support, emphasizing that student safety and comfort remain its top priority.
This case has sparked serious reflection on safeguarding practices within educational institutions, highlighting the importance of early reporting, transparent investigations, and strong preventive measures. As the legal process unfolds, the incident serves as a critical reminder for schools in Indonesia and neighboring Singapore to reinforce student protection systems and ensure safe learning environments.
