BPOM and HSA formalize cross-border cooperation to boost medicine safety standards
Indonesia and Singapore have taken a strategic step to elevate pharmaceutical and health product regulation, reinforcing regional credibility and global trust in Southeast Asia’s healthcare ecosystem.
Strengthening Cross-Border Health Regulation
Indonesia’s Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has formalized cooperation with Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA) to strengthen the regulation of pharmaceuticals and health products. The agreement focuses on ensuring internationally standardized oversight of medicines, vaccines, and other regulated health products, according to Antara News Agency.
MoU Signing Signals Deeper Collaboration
The collaboration was cemented through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Thursday at the BPOM office by BPOM head Taruna Ikrar and HSA Chief Executive Officer Raymond Chua. The MoU marks a formal framework for long-term regulatory collaboration between the two neighboring countries.
Improving Regulatory Processes and Clinical Trials
Under the agreement, both authorities will exchange regulatory information and share best practices to improve decision making and approval processes. This includes enhancing procedures for clinical trial approvals and establishing arrangements that allow clinical trials to be conducted across both jurisdictions.
Joint Assessments and Capacity Building
The partnership also covers joint assessments of pharmaceutical and health products. Beyond regulatory alignment, BPOM and HSA will engage in capacity-building initiatives such as workshops, training programs, and staff exchanges to strengthen institutional expertise on both sides.
Leveraging Technology and Global Standards
Both agencies have committed to jointly participating in international regulatory and scientific initiatives, including strategic efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into pharmaceutical regulatory oversight. This move reflects a growing emphasis on data-driven and technology-enabled regulation in line with global best practices.
ASEAN’s Global Positioning
Taruna Ikrar highlighted that BPOM and HSA are the only two regulatory authorities in Southeast Asia recognized as World Health Organisation Listed Authorities. He noted that closer collaboration would strengthen regulatory systems and enhance global reputation. Raymond Chua added that the cooperation could help position ASEAN as a preferred destination for the pharmaceutical and health products industry, alongside established markets such as the United States and the European Union.
This strengthened partnership signals a broader ambition to elevate ASEAN’s role in global healthcare regulation.
