Jakarta backs Gaza stabilization efforts while reaffirming Palestinian statehood as the ultimate goal

Indonesia has reiterated its long-standing commitment to Palestinian independence while cautiously supporting a new international security proposal for Gaza, stressing that peace cannot be achieved without a clear political endgame.

Indonesia’s Position on Gaza Security
Indonesia said on Wednesday that the proposed Gaza security force backed by US President Donald Trump would only serve as a temporary measure. The statement came as Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono delivered his annual foreign policy address in Jakarta, outlining Indonesia’s diplomatic priorities to ambassadors and the public.

Support With Clear Limits
The security initiative, known as the International Stabilization Force (ISF), is part of Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan. It proposes a coalition of foreign troops to train vetted Palestinian police forces and help stabilize Gaza. While Indonesia supports the concept, Sugiono emphasized that the ISF is strictly transitional and not a long-term solution.

Two-State Solution as the End Goal

Sugiono reaffirmed that peace through a two-state solution remains Indonesia’s ultimate objective. The framework, which calls for an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel, is widely recognized by the international community. He stressed that supporting Palestinian independence is not optional for Indonesia, but a constitutional mandate.

Ongoing Talks and Deployment Details
Indonesia is actively involved in discussions surrounding the formation of the ISF. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang confirmed that negotiations are still underway, particularly on rules of engagement and operational structure. As a result, Jakarta has not finalized how many personnel it may contribute to the force.

Security Coordination and Humanitarian Access
Under Trump’s proposal, the ISF would include a deconfliction mechanism aimed at reducing the risk of friendly fire. The force would coordinate with Israel and Egypt to secure border areas, while working alongside newly trained Palestinian officers to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and essential goods into Gaza.

A Temporary Tool, Not a Political Substitute
Indonesia underlined that the ISF must not replace political negotiations or delay a permanent ceasefire. Sugiono reiterated that any security arrangement must support humanitarian access and stability while paving the way for a lasting political settlement, not entrenching the status quo.

Indonesia’s stance reflects a careful balance between pragmatic engagement and principled diplomacy. By supporting temporary stabilization measures while firmly insisting on a two-state solution, Jakarta signals to both regional partners and global powers that security initiatives must ultimately serve justice, sovereignty, and lasting peace for Palestinians and regional stability that affects both Indonesians and Singaporeans.
