Search intensifies after tour boat disaster strikes foreign family holidaying in Komodo
What began as a family vacation in one of Indonesia’s most iconic destinations has turned into a heartbreaking maritime tragedy, drawing international attention and deep concern from both Asia and Europe.
Family Holiday Turns Fatal
The tragedy involved Valencia CF Women’s B coach Fernando Martín, 44, who was vacationing with his wife, Andrea, and their four children. The tour boat, also carrying four crew members and a local guide, reportedly suffered engine failure before sinking on Friday evening during a trip within the Komodo National Park area.
Yet Another Victim
Andrea, the couple’s youngest daughter Mar, another child, four crew members, and the local guide were rescued shortly after the incident. However, Martín and three of his children, aged 9, 10, and 12, remain missing, raising fears as search efforts enter critical days.

Intensified Search And Challenging Conditions
By Monday, the search operation had entered its fourth day, involving more than 100 personnel supported by police, navy units, inflatable boats, rescue vessels, and local fishers. Divers conducted deep-water searches between 18 and 28 meters, while surface teams expanded the search radius to cover a wider area.
Rescue teams combed waters surrounding Padar Island and nearby islets including Serai, Pengah, Papagarang, Siaba Besar, and northern Kanawa Island. Rahman noted that strong currents, heavy rain, and high waves significantly hampered operations.
Search Temporarily Halted
Search efforts were suspended on Monday evening due to worsening weather and poor visibility. Authorities confirmed operations would resume early Tuesday, in line with Indonesian regulations that mandate search missions to continue for seven days, with possible extensions if conditions allow.
Global Response And Safety Concerns
Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rugged landscapes and endangered Komodo dragons, attracts thousands of international visitors annually. The incident has renewed scrutiny on maritime safety in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands where boat travel is common but safety standards are often criticized.
Solidarity and Support from Others
Valencia CF expressed its condolences in a statement on X, calling the incident a devastating loss. Spain’s La Liga, along with major clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona, also conveyed messages of solidarity and support to the family and football community.
This tragedy underscores the risks that persist in popular tourist regions reliant on maritime transport. As Indonesian authorities continue the search, the incident highlights the urgent need for stronger safety enforcement, not only to protect local communities but also the growing number of international visitors from countries like Singapore and beyond who travel across the region.
