New executive order unites federal datasets, supercomputers, and national labs to accelerate scientific breakthroughs

The United States is escalating its race for global AI dominance with a sweeping new initiative. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order launching the Genesis Mission, a government-wide effort to unify federal scientific data and build advanced AI systems capable of accelerating discovery across critical fields.

A Centralised AI Platform for Scientific Discovery

Announced on Nov 24, the Genesis Mission aims to integrate vast federal scientific datasets into a unified AI training platform. By tapping into the computational power of US national labs and supercomputers, the initiative seeks to create scientific foundation models and AI agents that can automate experiments, analyse data, and speed up research timelines.

Trump described the mission as a landmark step toward mobilising “America’s brightest minds, most powerful computers and vast scientific data” into a coordinated national research system.

DOE to Build Closed-Loop AI Experimentation System

Under the executive order, the Department of Energy (DOE) will build a closed-loop experimentation platform capable of generating AI foundation models and powering robotic laboratories. This integrated system will allow scientists to test hypotheses, simulate experiments, and analyse findings at unprecedented speed.

Michael Kratsios, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the project will “massively accelerate the rate of scientific breakthrough” by unlocking datasets previously scattered across federal agencies.

From Years to Hours: AI for Faster Discovery

The Genesis Mission is designed to dramatically compress research timelines by using AI to:

  • Automate experiment design
  • Run advanced simulations
  • Generate predictive models for complex systems
  • Applications range from protein folding and biotechnology to fusion plasma modelling, offering potentially transformative implications for medicine, energy, and materials science.

Kratsios emphasised that tasks traditionally requiring years of experimentation could now be completed in days or even hours.

Strengthening National and Economic Security

The executive order highlights strategic sectors essential to US competitiveness and security. These include:

  • Biotechnology and critical materials
  • Nuclear fission and fusion energy
  • Quantum information science
  • Space exploration
  • Semiconductors and microelectronics

Energy Secretary Chris Wright noted that while private-sector AI investment is booming, national labs hold the high-value datasets required to pivot AI innovation toward scientific and engineering breakthroughs.

Part of Trump’s Bid to Win the AI Race Against China

Since taking office in January, Trump has prioritised making the US the global leader in artificial intelligence. He ordered the creation of an AI Action Plan, pushed to reduce regulatory barriers, and rescinded an AI safety order signed by former president Joe Biden.

The Genesis Mission underscores the administration’s view that AI is central to economic strength, national security, and geopolitical competition — particularly with China.

The Genesis Mission marks a significant escalation in America’s pursuit of AI leadership, with deep implications for global competition, scientific progress, and national security. For observers in Singapore, Indonesia, and the wider region, the initiative signals a future where breakthroughs in energy, health science, and advanced technology are increasingly shaped by large-scale government–AI collaboration.
