MyNIISe app trial promises quicker, passport-less clearance at Johor land checkpoints and airports
From September 22, 2025, Singaporeans crossing into Johor will be able to clear immigration using QR codes under Malaysia’s new National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe), potentially transforming the daily commute for hundreds of thousands.
Passport-Free Clearance via QR Code
The MyNIISe app, now available on major app stores, allows travellers from 63 countries and territories, including Singapore, to register and generate QR codes linked to their travel details. At Johor’s Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) checkpoints, commuters can scan their code at dedicated booths instead of undergoing manual counter checks.
Trial Period and Coverage
The trial will run from Sept 22, 2025 to Feb 28, 2026, covering land checkpoints in Johor and gradually expanding to airports in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu. By early 2026, the system is expected to replace MyBorderPass, Malaysia’s current QR clearance app.
Group and Vehicle Clearance
Unlike the MyBorderPass system, MyNIISe allows group travellers to clear immigration with a single QR code. For motorists, the code is scanned at a QR gate, automatically verifying passport and vehicle details. Once cleared, barriers lift without manual processing, significantly reducing waiting times at peak hours.
Infrastructure Upgrades at Checkpoints
At Johor Bahru’s BSI checkpoint, 27 booths have been equipped for MyNIISe use, while the Second Link will open 24 booths. These include dedicated lanes for cars, motorcycles, and pedestrians, with more booths to be added in phases as demand grows.
Security and Technology Enhancements
The multibillion-ringgit NIISe project is designed to replace Malaysia’s vulnerable legacy system with AI integration and facial recognition for stronger security. After delays and contractor changes, the rollout was brought forward from March 2026 to ensure earlier congestion relief and improved border management.

With over 300,000 crossings daily at Johor’s land checkpoints, the initiative promises faster, more seamless travel for workers, families, and tourists alike. Travellers must still carry passports or valid documents, but the streamlined system is expected to cut queues, reduce frustration, and support smoother cross-border movement.
