Singaporeans dominate arrivals as Johor prepares ambitious plans for Visit Johor Year 2026

Johor is witnessing a tourism surge, with over 14 million foreign visitors entering the state in the first half of 2025, most of them from neighboring Singapore.

Singaporeans Lead Arrivals

Johor unity, culture and heritage committee chairman K. Raven Kumar revealed that more than 11 million Singaporeans crossed into Johor between January and July 2025. This makes Singapore the largest contributor to Johor’s foreign arrivals, reflecting the state’s strong cross-border ties. Other key markets include Indonesia, China, India, the Philippines, European countries, and South Korea.

Overnight Stays on the Rise

Between January and March 2025, more than two million visitors, including Malaysians, stayed at least one night in Johor. This trend highlights the growing appeal of the state as more than just a day-trip destination, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and local attractions.

Preparing for Visit Johor Year 2026

The visitor surge is timely as Johor gears up for Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY2026). Raven emphasized that the encouraging numbers serve as a positive sign for both the state government and tourism players, who are preparing events and product upgrades to attract even more visitors. The government has set a target of 12 million tourist arrivals in 2026.

Spotlight on Small Town Tourism

To diversify attractions, Johor is promoting its small towns across 10 districts as tourism hubs. Many of these towns are located near natural attractions such as waterfalls and are known for their authentic local delicacies. State-level cultural events like Majestic Johor and Festival Zapin are now being hosted beyond Johor Bahru to draw visitors into lesser-known areas.

Cultural and Heritage Showcase

Raven made the announcements while officiating the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery’s Works on Paper: Art Inside the Wallet exhibition at Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar. The exhibition, which explores Malaysia’s artistic heritage through banknote design, will run for six months until February 18, 2026.

Broader Regional Impact

Johor’s tourism momentum underscores its role as a vital link in Southeast Asia’s travel circuit, particularly for Singaporeans seeking quick getaways and Indonesians connecting through Batam and other nearby hubs. The rising visitor numbers not only boost Johor’s economy but also strengthen cultural exchange across the region.

Johor’s robust tourism growth demonstrates its rising profile as a regional hub for culture, heritage, and leisure. With Singaporeans leading arrivals and new efforts to showcase small towns, the state’s preparations for Visit Johor Year 2026 could significantly impact both Malaysia’s and Singapore’s tourism economies, deepening cross-border cultural and economic ties.
