Passers-by unite in the rain to deliver a newborn after unexpected labour pains

A routine red light stop in Pasir Gudang, Johor, turned into a dramatic roadside delivery when a pregnant woman went into labour, with strangers stepping in to help and using a shoelace to cut the umbilical cord.

Labour Strikes at a Traffic Light

On Sunday, 10 August, a woman riding pillion on a motorcycle with her husband began experiencing sudden labour pains while waiting at a red light in Taman Bukit Dahlia, Pasir Gudang. Unable to continue, she lay down on the road, prompting the first passer-by — a woman in a black shirt — to comfort her but unsure of how to proceed.

Strangers Step In to Assist

Despite calls for help, many bystanders declined. It was an Indian woman on her way to the temple who finally stopped to assist. By then, the mother was already pushing. Her husband called for more help, and another woman — the eventual video poster — was enlisted from her nearby car.

Baby Delivered in the Rain

Umbrellas were placed to shield the mother from rain and provide privacy, while others redirected traffic around the scene. When the helper arrived, she saw the baby already halfway out. Together with the Indian woman, she helped deliver the newborn safely.

Improvising with a Shoelace

With the umbilical cord still attached and no scissors on hand, the group improvised, using a food delivery rider’s shoelace to tie the cord tightly before severing it. The mother, still in pain and losing blood, was given a sweet drink to help her recover while waiting for medical assistance.

Thirty Minutes to the Ambulance

It took 30 minutes for the ambulance to arrive. By that time, the strangers had done everything possible — from controlling traffic to offering towels and headscarves. None of the rescuers had known each other before that day, yet they worked in unison under the rain.

Mother and Baby Safe

The woman later contacted one of the helpers from the hospital, confirming that both she and her newborn were safe. While she remained under medical observation and had yet to reunite with her baby, the infant was reported to be doing well.
