Johor authorities to revoke licences of car wash centres that reject Malaysian customers for profit
Johor’s state government is cracking down on discriminatory car wash operators accused of prioritizing Singaporean vehicles while turning away Malaysian customers. The move follows public outcry on social media and reaffirms the state’s stance on putting locals first.
Viral Backlash Sparks Official Response
The controversy ignited after a video circulated on social media alleging that a car wash in Johor Bahru refused to serve local Malaysian vehicles, catering exclusively to those with Singaporean license plates. The footage reportedly showed local walk-in customers being turned away while workers—believed to be foreigners—claimed all slots were booked for Singaporean clients.
Firm Warning from Johor State Government
State Housing and Local Government Committee Chairman, Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, swiftly responded. Speaking at the Johor Property Expo 2025 on July 24, he confirmed that local councils will be instructed to investigate such practices and revoke business licences if violations continue. “We will not tolerate businesses in Johor that prioritize foreigners over locals just for bigger profits,” he asserted.
Licence Revocation for Discriminatory Operators

Jafni emphasized that operators who ignore the needs of Johoreans would face consequences. He issued a direct warning to the car wash in question and any others engaging in similar behaviour. “If they continue serving only foreign-registered vehicles, especially from Singapore, we will cancel their licence,” he said, underlining the administration’s zero-tolerance policy.
Profits Must Not Override Responsibility
He acknowledged the desire of businesses to maximize profits but reminded them of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). Citing the same principle applied to the Johor Affordable Housing Scheme, Jafni explained that while developers can make profits, they must also build affordable housing to benefit locals. The message was clear: businesses must grow with the community—not at its expense.
Social Unity Over Economic Gain
The controversy has stirred public sentiment in Johor, with many questioning the fairness of local businesses prioritizing foreigners. In a state deeply tied economically to Singapore, the delicate balance between cross-border profits and local well-being is under renewed scrutiny. Authorities now appear determined to protect residents from being sidelined by commercial interests.
The swift intervention by Johor’s leadership reflects broader concerns about fairness, inclusivity, and equitable treatment of locals in a cross-border economic zone. As Johor continues to develop rapidly with close ties to Singapore, business operators are being reminded that community trust and social accountability are just as important as revenue. For Indonesians and Singaporeans engaging with Johor’s businesses, this move reinforces the importance of respecting local dynamics and regulatory expectations.
