Six months after the brutal shooting, police detain foreign national suspected of involvement
Authorities in Johor have arrested a 65-year-old foreign man suspected of involvement in a deadly restaurant shooting in Taman Setia Indah, reviving investigations into a case linked to secret societies and gang retaliation.
Fresh Arrest in Long-Running Murder Probe
Six months after a 40-year-old man was gunned down while dining at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah, Johor police have detained a 65-year-old foreign suspect in the city centre. The arrest was made on July 15 at 4:30pm, according to Johor Baru South OCPD Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat.
The suspect is now under a seven-day remand order until July 22, assisting police in uncovering the full scope of the fatal shooting that took place on January 8. ACP Raub stated this was a major step forward in the murder case, though he declined to disclose more details due to the ongoing investigation.
Links to Secret Societies and Revenge
The murder, where the victim was shot at close range by an unknown assailant who fled on a motorcycle, is believed to be connected to a secret society conflict. Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar previously revealed that revenge was a likely motive, with gang rivalry suspected as a driving force behind the assassination-style killing.
A post-mortem revealed four gunshot wounds on the victim, confirming death due to a bullet wound to the chest. Investigators soon formed a special task force with Bukit Aman officers to trace the culprits.
Raids and Shoot-Outs in March
In March, the case intensified. On March 8, police killed a 64-year-old suspect in a shootout at Taman Molek, recovering a Smith & Wesson pistol and ammunition. Within hours, six other men, aged 48 to 66, were arrested at a house along Jalan Ah Siang, along with drugs, digital scales, and an air pistol.
Further raids on March 17 led to the arrest of three more men between ages 36 and 62. A semi-automatic Sig Sauer pistol, along with two cartridge cases holding a total of 15 bullets, was seized.
Weapons Forensics Connects the Dots
Ballistics tests confirmed that bullets and casings from the Taman Setia Indah murder matched one of the firearms confiscated in the March operations. This breakthrough reinforced police belief that the attacks were coordinated and driven by ongoing tensions within secret societies.
Despite the arrest of nine men in March, all were released after review by the Deputy Public Prosecutor. Authorities continued the manhunt, culminating in the latest arrest of the 65-year-old man, which could prove pivotal in solving the case.
Ongoing Investigation, Regional Implications
While Johor police have made significant progress, they remain cautious, emphasizing that the investigation is far from over. This case, blending organised crime, cross-border elements, and targeted violence, underlines growing concerns about gang influence in the region.

Both Malaysian and Singaporean communities closely monitor such developments, especially amid rising transnational crime. The outcome of this case may affect public confidence in local safety measures and regional crime control cooperation.
This murder investigation highlights the persistent threat of secret society violence in Malaysia and its possible regional reach. The arrest of the 65-year-old suspect may be a turning point, offering hope for justice in a case that has unsettled both Johor residents and nearby Singaporeans concerned about escalating criminal activity.
