Helmeted assailants fire multiple shots before fleeing, police launch urgent manhunt
Two men from Sarawak were shot dead outside a shopping mall in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, just after midnight on June 17. The brazen attack, carried out by helmet-wearing assailants, has triggered a high-priority investigation as authorities scour CCTV footage and witness accounts.
Ambushed Outside the Mall
At approximately 12:15 a.m. on June 17, two men were walking toward their parked car near a shopping complex along Jalan Loke Yew, Cheras, when a group of helmeted attackers suddenly approached and opened fire.
According to local media, the assailants fired several shots before escaping the scene in a Perodua Alza. The victims, both reportedly in their 40s and from Sibu, Sarawak, sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head and body and were declared dead at the scene.
Police Mobilize Forensic Team

The Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent, along with the Cheras District Police and a forensic unit, quickly arrived at the scene to begin investigations. Law enforcement has retrieved CCTV footage and is interviewing witnesses to piece together the sequence of events and identify the attackers.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which pertains to murder, confirmed Cheras police. Authorities have yet to confirm a motive, and no arrests have been made as of press time.
Echoes of Recent Violence
This incident comes just days after another fatal shooting occurred at a restaurant in Brickfields on June 13, where one person was killed and two others injured. The back-to-back shootings have raised public concern over the resurgence of gun-related violence in Kuala Lumpur.
While authorities have not linked the two cases, the similarities in tactics—targeted attacks and quick getaways—are drawing attention. Both cases are now under intense scrutiny by police investigators.
Call for Public Cooperation
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is urging anyone with information to come forward as efforts intensify to track the suspects, who are believed to have planned the attack with precision.
Police sources indicate that they are pursuing multiple leads, and a formal update is expected from the PDRM in the coming days. Meanwhile, security has been tightened around similar public locations in the city.
This chilling attack underscores growing anxieties around urban safety in Malaysia. As both countries work toward tighter cross-border crime prevention, Indonesians and Singaporeans with connections to Kuala Lumpur are reminded of the rising importance of public vigilance and prompt law enforcement response to prevent further tragedies.
